Linux for PlayStation®2
Since the launch of PlayStation 2, Sony Computer Entertainment has received numerous requests from members of the Linux community to enable Linux programs to run on PlayStation 2. In response to these requests, the Linux Beta Version Kit was made available to approximately 7,900 enthusiasts in Japan in July 2001. Worldwide requests for the Linux kit to be made available outside Japan have continued, and over 9,000 Linux users responded to a SCEE online questionnaire, saying that they would buy the kit if it were available. In response to this movement, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has now released Linux for PlayStation 2 to support the Linux user community across the PAL territories.
- Linux is an operating system popular in computing professional and academic circles, and is most commonly deployed as the software controlling server-type computers - in particular hosting the majority of the world's websites.
- The Linux kit includes a full implementation of the Linux kernel together with a suite of applications (editors, graphics tools, GCC compiler etc.) including an X-window desktop environment.
- The availability of Linux running directly on PlayStation 2 clearly demonstrates the capabilities of PlayStation 2 as a general purpose computing platform.
- Community Website for both European and American users.
- www.linuxplay.com to purchase the Linux Kit in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
- http://au.playstation.com/technology/linuxkit.jhtml for Australian users to purchase the kit.
